Create art in the landscape-not such an outlandish idea! Frederic Church sketched outside noting details in nature and went back to the studio to paint. Drop-in for sketch paper, pencils and clipboards. Head out into Olana's picturesque landscape to sketch your very own view. Come back to the "studio" to use colored pencils, oil pastels and watercolors to finish your artwork.

Preserving herbs from the late summer garden

Learn the techniques and process of preserving the summer garden herbs all winter long with local nutritionist Betsy Cashen. Learn about herbs that can be preserved in oils, dehydrated and used in foods and drinks. Recipes will be offered at the workshop and a tasting of a variety of herbs in foods will be offered. Take the family tour and then stop by the Wagon House Education Center for Saturday Spotlight, or borrow a backpack full of activities to do on the grounds - a family day at Olana couldn't be more perfect! Learn about the botany of dyeing fabrics. Most plant parts have a mixture of pigments. Learn what plants can be used to dye, including garden flowers and weeds. Looking Glass is a site-specific performance utilizing and highlighting the architecture of Frederic Church's home. Drawing its inspiration from Lewis Carroll's "Alice" texts, the work invites audiences to see their surroundings anew and encourages them to explore the environment and follow performers as they move throughout the Olana landscape in a durational re-imagining of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through The Looking Glass. Third Rail Dance Company Workshop:
Creating Site-specific Work & Working with Soft Bodies on Hard Surfaces

In this workshop, Third Rail projects' artists lead participants through their process of creating site-specific movement works. A grab-bag of choreographic tactics focus on working with the architecture of a site to pull images and meaning from its components. Together, participants will explore techniques for generating movement through improvisation and collaboration, for working with soft bodies on hard surfaces, and for considering the geometry of a playing area to access focal points and capitalize on emphatic spacial elements. Issues of developing work for the public sphere are included: techniques for researching a site and exploring its possibilities in movement; finding hidden meaning in a space and developing methods to amplify it; and experimenting with the most effective methods of capturing and holding an audience's attention in a public setting. This "full" process non-competitive experience will include creating original scripts, sets and props. Richard Loren Copley has been experimenting with 3D photography for over 25 years and has created his own stereographic film and digital cameras to capture the realism that only the third dimension of depth provides. Learn about authentic Civil War stereographs from 1861-1865 during a lecture by Mr. Copley. Learn about the process of making the 3D photographs as well as viewing the many historic photographs Mr. Copley has recreated from the Library of Congress. Richard Ronconi, Master Beekeeper of the Catskill Mountain Beekeeper's Club will lead a power point presentation on the process of beekeeping in the 19th Century and how that process differs today. Learn how the working farm at Olana was affected and benefited from the bees. Participants will be able to see the bees "at work" with the teaching hive. Registration is requested but not required. Frederic Church applied his artistic talent to so much more than his monumental paintings. Olana can be seen as a three-dimensional artistic composition; a living landscape painting he spent decades perfecting. Olana's curators will lead visitors through the property sharing the many artistic compositions created by Church, from the careful artistic arrangement of objects in the home's interiors, to the painterly scenes he created outdoors through his own landscaping efforts. Learn a new style of writing. Join teaching artist Patty Tyrol, who received her MA in Printmaking from SUNY New Paltz and has exhibited her prints nationally and taught widely for the past twenty five years. Use brushes and India ink to practice Persian style calligraphy. Work with watercolors and colored pencils to create "illuminated letters." Complete your piece of artwork on rice paper and come back next week to make a kite from your piece of artwork!
