Create art in the landscape-not such an outlandish idea! Frederic Church sketched outside noting details in nature and went back to the studio to paint. Drop-in for sketch paper, pencils and clipboards. Head out into Olana's picturesque landscape to sketch your very own view. Come back to the "studio" to use colored pencils, oil pastels and watercolors to finish your artwork.

Many cultures have used quilts as a way to remember the past and share stories. Celebrate the Fourth of July by creating a quilt of your very own! This easy to do, no sewing quilt can tell the story of a scene in history, or a favorite Fourth of July celebration with family. Be inspired by Frederic Church's painting "Our Banner in the Sky" and learn about patterns, textures, and colors. Bring your quilt home and display for everyone to see your story. This one woman play performed by Triple Shadow's actress Mari Andrejco and directed by Beth Skinner is excerpted from William Luce's play The Belle of Amherst . The play sheds light on the life of Emily Dickinson, incorporating aspects of her life including her poetry, home, garden and village of Amherst. Kim Bach, owner of Verdigris Tea will share her knowledge of teas native to the many regions that Frederic Church traveled to throughout his lifetime. Participants will learn of the many varieties of teas from India, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Middle East. In addition, Ms. Bach will explore teas that represent the fruits that the artist grew in his orchards at Olana. Participants will have the opportunity to taste different teas and to make their own individual blend of loose teas to bring home. Seating is limited and pre-registration suggested. Take the family tour and then stop by the Wagon House Education Center for Saturday Spotlight, or borrow a backpack full of activities to do on the grounds - a family day at Olana couldn't be more perfect! Tours are geared for families with 6-12 year-olds, but all ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are required by 4pm the preceding Friday. Each bird creates a unique nest. Learn about the different birds and where they build their nests and what items they use to do so. Listen to a story during Reader's Theater and take a walk in the Olana landscape to try to find those nests. Look through a pair of binoculars to get a better view. Natural Forms in Drawing and Painting

Frederic Church loved to collect and study natural objects as well as paint dramatic scenes in nature. Observe the natural forms of a sea shell, the skeleton form of a turtle, or seedpod. Learn to draw from observation and appreciate the beauty of nature. Express what you see using the many marks you can make with a pencil and a watercolor brush. Bookmaking Eastern-style: Persian Motifs at Olana

Participants will learn the basics of making simple books inspired by examples of Frederic Church's favorite Persian motifs. Using a combination of Wagon House art supplies and specialty supplies and tools provided by the instructor, participants will be shown book-making steps that lead to a finished book. Each participant will be encouraged to fill their pages with text and images inspired by Persian art and design. Please reserve by 4pm preceding Friday.
