Walking Tour: Historic Landscape & Viewshed

This landscape walk along Olana’s upper carriage road loop provides unparalleled 360-degree views. Experience Frederic Church’s naturalistic composition and discover how Olana’s power as a three-dimensional work of art has served to protect its integral viewshed today. This guided walk is the best way to immerse yourself in Church’s greatest masterpiece, designed over four decades. Views stretch toward four states, and the walk passes meadows and native woodlands and includes singular views of Olana’s Main House and Studio Wing. Highlights include the site of Frederic Church’s earlier painting studio, views down toward Olana’s farm complex and lake, and the nationally significant role that Olana has played in landmark environmental conservation decisions in recent years. Offered rain or shine along one mile of easy walking along gravel and paved roads. This participatory experience is best paired with any of the guided Artist’s House and thematic tours. Walking shoes and water are encouraged.
