Special Exhibition: Afterglow (45 minutes)

Closing October 26th– Don’t miss this guided exploration of this season’s special exhibition, “Afterglow: Frederic Church and the Landscape of Memory.” Concentrated in the Sharp Family Gallery on the second floor of the historic house, this exhibition reflects on art and landscape as sources of comfort and remembrance, an ideal found throughout Olana’s artist-designed environment. At the heart of the exhibition are a selection of Frederic Church’s rarely seen memorial landscape paintings. These intimate works full of personal symbolism demonstrate how Church and his family found peace after loss. In addition to Church’s paintings, you will see work of his contemporaries, and compelling historical artifacts, which all serve as key documents of nineteenth-century America’s search for spirituality in nature and ways of remembering loved ones. This tour includes a glimpse of the restored family bedrooms on the second floor.

This tour requires several flights of stairs and is not ADA accessible.
